At Dr Tan’s practice we are taking and encouraging the following preventative measures to ensure staff and patient health and safety and to limit/slow down the spread of disease:
- – Hand washing frequently with soap and water
- – Alcohol hand spray is placed throughout the practice for both patients and staff use – this is encouraged before entering and when leaving any consulting room and before using the EFTPOS machine
- – The EFTPOS machine is wiped down with hospital grade alcohol wipes after each use
- – The cleaning of all surfaces has been increased (table surfaces, waiting room chairs etc.)
- – Water jug and cups in the waiting room have been removed for the time being
- – Children’s toys, books and also magazines have been removed from the waiting room
- – Our front door to the practice will remain open, so as to limit contact
- – We have spaced out chairs in the waiting room to help with social distancing
- – Appointments have been spread out to minimise patient numbers in the waiting room
- – Avoidance of anyone who is unwell – if you or anyone else attending the practice shows signs of being unwell, you will be asked to leave the practice
- – Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth
- – Social-distancing and reducing general community exposure
- – Limiting visitors/family members to the practice (partners only, when necessary)

With the declaration of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, we understand that Dr Tan’s patients and their loved ones may feel a sense of anxiety about their own health and that of their unborn or newborn baby. The below information outlines some of the knowledge available to us now regarding risks to pregnant women and their unborn/new born baby, advice regarding self-care during pregnancy and changes to the way that antenatal and postnatal care will be delivered.
At this time, pregnant women do not appear to be more severely unwell if they develop COVID-19 infection than the general population. It is expected the large majority of pregnant women will experience only mild or moderate cold/flu like symptoms. Women who wish to breastfeed their babies should be encouraged and supported to do so. At the moment there is no evidence that the virus is carried in breastmilk and, therefore, the well-recognised benefits of breastfeeding outweigh any potential risks of transmission of COVID-19 through breastmilk.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are a high fever and respiratory symptoms, including cough, sore throat and shortness of breath. In more severe cases, infection can cause pneumonia with severe acute respiratory distress.
**A Public Health Emergency has been declared in the ACT by the Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith MLA, effective Monday 16 March 2020.
** Any persons arriving into Australia from overseas must self-quarantine for 14 days, regardless of Country of origin and whether symptoms are present or not.
** The ACT’s walk-in centres are available to assess and test individuals who are concerned that they have COVID-19. The preferred walk-in centre for assessment is the Weston Creek walk-in centre [24 Parkinson Street, Weston].
If you have any questions or concerns in relation to the Coronavirus, please call the hotline on 1800 020 080
